TEXTBOOK: Matrix Analysis, by Horn and Johnson
CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Advanced topics in linear algebra including canonical forms, inner product spaces, bilinear forms, tensor products, and applications to other branches of mathematics.
EXAMS: There will be one midterm and one final exam. The
final exam will be comprehensive over the entire semester, and it will consist of a take-home section and an in-class section. Makeup
exams will only be given if there is a very good and verifiable
reason for missing the exam. Notify me immediately if you cannot
take an exam.
HOMEWORK: There will be 6-8 assignments. Most of the
homework will involve proofs, and in general the homework will
be indicative of the type and difficulty of material that you
need to know for the exams. Homework assignments are expected
to be turned in on time. After I correct them, you will then have one additional week to make revisions to your solutions. After the revisions have been turned in, I will post solutions outside my office.
