Math 150: Fundamentals of Algebra for Science and Higher Mathematics

CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Linear equations and inequalities, linear programming, matrix algebra, discrete probability.

PREREQUISITES: Satisfactory performance on placement exam, 2 years of high school algebra, and 1 year of high school geometry.

TEXTBOOK: The textbook is Finite Mathematics: An Applied Approach, by Mizrahi and Sullivan. We will cover Chapters 1-4, 6, and 7, and part of Chapter 8. A calculator is not required for this course, but you are allowed to use one on homework and exams it you want to.

EXAMS: There will be four midterm exams and a final exam. Each midterm exam will cover only the material since the previous test, but the final exam will be comprehensive. Makeup exams will only be given if there is a very good and verifiable reason for missing the exam. Notify me immediately if you cannot take an exam.

The four midterm exams will be given on the following dates and times:
Thursday, September 18 6:30-7:30 pm
Tuesday, October 14 6:30-7:30 pm
Tuesday, November 4 8:00-9:00 pm
Thursday, December 4 6:30-7:30 pm
Make sure you reserve these times on your calendar. Also, there will be no class  on September 19, October 15, November 5, and December 5.

There will also be five announced quizzes. Makeup quizzes will not be allowed, but the two lowest quiz scores will be dropped.

HOMEWORK: There will be daily homework assignments. These will not be collected or graded. However, solutions will be discussed in class. The assigned problems will be indicative of the type and difficulty of material that you need to know for the exams. However, note that the assignments are minimal. In general, you should do as many problems as you need to understand each topic. You can use the text as a source for additional problems.

GRADING:

Quizzes: 16% total
Midterm Exams: 14.5% each
Final Exam: 26%
