Hyperbolas with Center at (h,k)

The applet below lets you explore the graphs of hyperbolas with center at (h,k).
There are two types, discussed below.


The first type of hyperbola is generated by the equation

     

This hyperbola, shown in red below, opens to the left and right. The asymptotes y=(b/a)(x-h)+k and y=-(b/a)(x-h)+k are shown in green. Where are the foci? Use the sliders to explore the effects of changing the values of a, b, h, and k.
