Online Tutoring
(but first read the instructions below)
One way to get help in this class is through our online tutoring
system, known as NetTutor. NetTutor uses a "whiteboard" to
allow interaction between the tutor and students. This is similar to an online chat
room, but you can use mathematical symbols, draw graphs and pictures, etc. Online
tutoring is available most afternoon and evening hours. You can also post questions
for the tutors at any time and view their answer later.
Here is the current schedule for Summer 2001:
- In the Live Classroom section of NetTutor,
you can interact in real-time with online tutors provided by the textbook publisher
(McGraw Hill). These are available in the MH "Tutorial Class" according
to the following schedule:
|
Monday-Thursday
|
12 noon - 8 pm EASTERN time
|
|
Friday
|
10am - 6 pm EASTERN time
|
- In the Q&A Center section of NetTutor,
you can submit questions at any time to the tutors in the MH
"class", and retrieve your answers later.
- In the Archive Center section of NetTutor,
ISU-Precalculus "class", you can view detailed solutions to selected
problems.
First time setup:
- Go the NETTUTOR WEB SITE, and click on
the New user, please register first link.
- Type in the following Access code: 263-149-5667. Then type in the rest of the
required information and click on the Register button.
- You should now be at the opening screen. From now on, when
you go the NETTUTOR WEB SITE and login, using
your chosen username and password, you should end up at this screen. Also, you can
return to this screen at any time from within NetTutor by clicking on Live Classroom button
at the top left of the window.
Using NetTutor:
- Go the NETTUTOR WEBSITE, and login.
- The opening screen shows you a schedule of tutoring hours
for this class, and will show you if the tutor is "in" or "out".
If the tutor is in, there should also be a red button under the Action column which says Live Tutorial or Live Chat. Click on this button to
enter the tutoring session.
- Live Tutorial: Briefly, in the Live Tutorial session,
you are viewing a whiteboard which shows the tutor's interaction with each student.
You can ask the tutor a question via the Ask
a Question button at the bottom. This puts you into
a separate whiteboard so you can ask the question. When the tutor gets to your question,
the tutor will answer and you can interact with the tutor on the whiteboard. Everyone
else can view the question and answer as well. Then the tutor will move on to the
next question. The text window at the bottom of the screen shows a log of which question
is being answered, how many are waiting, etc.
- Live Chat: The Live Chat session is similar, but consists
of a single whiteboard on which anyone can write. Each person's text color is different.
The tutor can then lead a discussion, and move to a clean board when necessary.
- Using the whiteboard: Basically, you can type on the
whiteboard and draw on it. But there are also more sophisticated features, using
the buttons on the left and menus at top. See Learning
NetTutor below for more information.
- Q&A Center:
Besides the Live Tutorials and Live Chats, you can also ask the tutors a question
at any time in the Q&A Center (at the top of the opening screen). Tutors
will answer the questions each day, and then you can retrieve the answer later.
- Message Center:
In the Message Center, you can post a question on a class bulletin board by clicking
on the Post a Board button. Any other student in the class can respond in the Archive Center.
- Archive Center: You may find the answers to some of
your own questions here. You can view previous questions and answers in three areas:
- Browse the bulletin board, and respond to questions posted
by others if you want.
- Browse the boards in all Live Chat sessions. These are saved
automatically.
- Browse boards that the tutors have saved in Live Tutorial
sessions. These boards contain solutions to some of the more typical exercises in
the course.
- One more item: You can participate in a tutorless Live Chat
with other students at any time. Just choose Live
Classroom to get back to the opening screen, and then
choose the blue
Live Chat Board
button in the Action column for our class.
Learning NetTutor:
- You can participate in a live demonstation to help you learn
the system. This is a service of the NetTutor providers. You will need to
register first, as described in first
time setup above.
- From within NetTutor, look at the Online Manual or choose Help
from within the whiteboard. This will show you details on how to use the whiteboard
