Mathematics 511: Complex Variables

Homework 1 (Due Friday Feb. 1): 1) p. 7 problem 1; 2) Prove Propositions 1.9 c) and 1.11 c); 3) Prove Prop. 1.13 (a) and (d); 4) Show by counterexample that Theorem 2.9 is false without the hypothesis that G is open; 5) p. 20 problem 7 (also prove that {x_n} is Cauchy whenever |x_n| goes to infinity.

Homework 2 is due Mon. Feb 18.

  Course Topics:

  We will cover the first 6 chapters of the text, together with selected topics as time permits. The topics are:

  • Chapter 1, 2: Basics: Complex geometry, Topology of complex plane
  • Chapter 3: Analytic functions
  • Chapter 4: Integration; Cauchy's theorem, open mapping theorem
  • Chapter 5: Singularities, Argument Principle
  • Chapter 6; Maximum Modulus Theorem, Schwarz Lemma

  Course Policy

  The course grade is based upon the scores from quizzes and homework (60 percent of course grade), a final exam (25 percent), and projects, presentations of problems on the board (15%). All quizzes will be announced in class at least one class in advance. Due to the high amount of theory, I have a grade scale that is more spread-out than usual. I may curve a bit, but I expect approximately an 80-65-50 percent scale.

  Homework, Quizzes:

  I'll assign many problems to work on (practice problems), but will only collect a few. Some problems that I don't collect will be quiz material. Many problems that I don't collect or have on a quiz will either be gone over in class. Late homework will be downgraded. After I go over it in class it will no longer be accepted for credit. No make up quiz will be given for an unexcused absence during a quiz.

  The classroom is always the primary source of information. I will try to post helpful information like assignments from time to time, but since typing errors, posting errors, etc. may occur, the this should be viewed as a secondary source of information. Please let me know if you think something may be posted incorrectly and if so I will correct it.
