The first award of the Denes Konig Prize will be presented at the SIAM Conference on Discrete Mathematics, to be held June 16-19, 2008, at the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont. The prize is awarded biennially to a junior researcher or junior researchers for outstanding research, as determined by the prize committee, in an area of discrete mathematics, based on a publication by the candidate(s) in a peer-reviewed journal published in the three calendar years prior to the year of the award. The term +AGAAYA-discrete mathematics'' is used in the spirit of the SIAG/DM website, http://www.siam.org/activity/dm, and includes combinatorics, graph theory, cryptography, discrete optimization, mathematical programming, coding theory, information theory, game theory, and theoretical computer science. Eligibility The paper by the candidate(s) must be published in English in a peer-reviewed journal bearing a publication date within the award period, that is, the three calendars prior to the year of the award. Each candidate must be a PhD student or, at the time of the award be within four years after completing a PhD. Description of the Award The awardee will receive a plaque. At least one of the awardees is expected to attend the award ceremony and to present the paper at the meeting. Travel funds will be made available to reimburse one recipient for reasonable travel expenses incurred in attending the award ceremony. Nominations Nominations should be sent by NOVEMBER 30, 2007, to: Denes Konig Prize Committee Professor Lenore Cowen, Chair c/o J. M. The award will be presented at the SIAM Annual Meeting to be held July 7-11, 2008, in San Diego, California. The George Polya Prize honors the memory of George Polya and is given in even-numbered years for notable contributions in two alternating categories: (1) for a notable application of combinatorial theory+ADs- (2) for a notable contribution in another area of interest to George Polya, such as approximation theory, complex analysis, number theory, orthogonal polynomials, probability theory, or mathematical discovery and learning. Eligibility There are no restrictions except that the prize is broadly intended to recognize specific recent work. Strong preference will be given to selecting one person as the prize winner. Description of Award The award will consist of an engraved medal and a +ACQ-20,000 cash prize. Travel expenses to the award ceremony will be provided by the prize fund. Nominations A letter of nomination, including a description of achievement(s) should be sent by DECEMBER 31, 2007, to: George Polya Prize Selection Committee Dr. Rolf Moehring, Chair c/o J. M. As you may know, we are in the process of revising the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC), which we do every ten years, to make it more accurate and useful. We need your input. Please take a look at the current classifications (http://www.ams.org/msc) and think about how they can be improved. You might want to do this while browsing MathSciNet (http://www.ams.org/mathscinet/search.html) to see how various papers are being classified. (Each paper gets a primary and zero or more secondary classifications.) You may send your comments, questions, and suggestions directly to me at jwg+AEA-ams.org, or (better) you may use the feedback form on the MSC Web page. Feel free to pass this message on to other groups or individuals who might be interested. The more input we get, the better, so please discuss this with your colleagues and share your ideas with us. +AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQA9AD0APQ- 7. +ACoAKgAq- Second announcement: Mathematical Abundance Conference - Normal, IL, April 18-19, 2008 +ACoAKgAq- ------ This is the Second Announcement for: Mathematical Abundance: Designs, Graphs and Number Theory - a conference honoring the 72nd birthday of Charles Vanden Eynden April 18-19, 2008 Mathematics Department Illinois State University Invited Speakers: George E.
