Elections for new board ================================================================= 1. *** Denes Konig prize in discrete mathematics *** ------ We are pleased to announce that we have established a new prize for junior researchers DENES KONIG PRIZE IN DISCRETE MATHEMATICS. It is to be awarded biennially to a junior researcher or junior researchers for outstanding research, as determined by the prize committee, in an area of discrete mathematics, based on a publication by the candidate(s) in a peer-reviewed journal published in the three calendar years prior to the year of the award. The first award will be presented at SIAM DM 2008 (see item 2. below). More details can be found at http://www.siam.org/prizes/sponsored/konig.php The initial prize committee consists of Herbert Wilf, Laszlo Lovasz, Lenore Cowen (chair), Lex Schrijver, and Peter Winkler. Nominations should be sent by November 30, 2007, to: Denes Konig Prize Committee Professor Lenore Cowen, Chair c/o J. M. It is possible that these deadlines will be delayed slightly; please consult the conference webpage in a few weeks. The conference webpage is at http://www.siam.org/meetings/dm08/ ================================================================= 3. *** SIAM annual meeting - San Diego, CA, July 7-11, 2008 *** ------ The 2008 SIAM Annual Meeting being held from July 7-11, 2008 at the Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, San Diego, California will have an unusual amount of programming this year that may be of interest to Discrete Mathematicians. In particular, Tammy Kolda and Lenore Cowen are the co-chairs, and one of the meeting themes is Networks: Biological, Social and Internet and John Kleinberg, Trey Ideker, and Mark Newman are among the invited speakers, and there will be minisymposia on this theme as well (the deadline to submit minisymposium proposals if you want to organize your own is in mid-January). SIAM annual meetings of interest to our activity group are evidently going to be a trend, as the Discrete Math activity group has been invited to organize a track at the 2009 SIAM annual meeting. This is a year when we don't have a Discrete Math meeting, so mark your calendars for July 2009 in Denver, Colorado. More information on the meeting is posted at http://www.siam.org/meetings/an08/ ================================================================= 4. *** Elections for new board *** ------ As our term is coming to an end, a new slate of nominees for the SIAG offices has been prepared by a nominating committee comprising Joan Hutchinson, Mark Ellingham, Ortrud Oellermann, Felix Lazebnik, Pavol Hell, and Derek Corneil (chair).
