First, I wanted to apologize that this is so late. It was intended to be distributed on 9/7. However, after a followup email, Diane Fryer told me that server problems at SIAM prevented her getting to this at that time. In addition, I had planned to make this newsletter a bit more sophisticated. Not much, just to make it in the MS Word rich text format, which converts easily to text format, but allows the use of things like hot hyperlinks, without the illegibility that HTML files create in text mailreaders like pine. Diane informs me that the software that the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics uses to distribute this newsletter can only accept ASCII files. This is an annoyance from my point of view, not just for this reason but because some accents do not survive into my software programs' use of ASCII (my particular apologies to Prof. Radoicic). Website archive There is a website with past (and current) versions of this newsletter. There are also some useful links, duplicating many from the SIAG DM webpage and others added upon request. The URL for the newsletter archive is http://orion.math.iastate.edu/rymartin/dm-net.html but we will not provide any links to that page, other than in these emails. Enjoy and feel free to give feedback directly to dm-net@siam.org or my personal email if you like! -- Ryan ================================================================= 2. *** SIAM annual meeting: Registration and Programs Now Available! *** ------ The Department of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College will host the 8th annual Mathematics Conference on Saturday, October 7, 2006 in Claremont, California. The topic this year is: ENUMERATIVE COMBINATORICS There will be four keynote speakers: SPEAKERS: * George E. Andrews (Pennsylvania State University) Partition Analysis and the Search for Modular Forms * Igor Pak (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) MacMahon's Master Theorem * Carla D. Savage (North Carolina State University) The Binomial Essence of Lecture Hall Partitions * Doron Zeilberger (Rutgers University) Beautiful and Insightful Computer-Generated Bijective Proofs There will be a contributed POSTER SESSION for research related to the conference theme. Abstracts should be submitted by September 12. Also, we have funding from the National Science Foundation to provide some TRAVEL SUPPORT to non-local graduate students and recent Ph.D.'s. For more information, registration, abstract submission, or to apply for travel support, see the conference website: http://www.math.hmc.edu/baldyconf/ Register online by September 19 and a COMPLIMENTARY catered lunch will be included with your registration. Please pass this information on to interested colleagues and students. 3. EXCILL: Extremal Combinatorics at Illinois Department of Mathematics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign November 18-20, 2006 (Saturday to Monday before Thanksgiving) Organizers: J. Balogh, Z. Füredi, S. Hartke, A. Kostochka, and D. B. West Website: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~excill/ This conference emphasizes the optimization and extremal aspects of combinatorics. Topics to be discussed include extremal set theory, coloring theory for graphs and hypergraphs, Ramsey theory, cycles in graphs, discrete geometry, and probabilistic methods in combinatorics. The program consists of six 50-minute lectures and up to 24 additional 25-minute invited talks; no contributed talks or parallel sessions. Altgeld Hall (the conference building, housing the Mathematics Department) will be open and available on Tuesday for attendees who wish to stay an extra day for informal collaborations on open problems. Main speakers: B. Bollobas, J. Kahn, D.J. Kleitman, M. Simonovits, R. Thomas, W.T. Trotter. Other invited speakers: P. Balister, G. Chen, F. Chung Graham, R. Graham, J. Griggs, P. Haxell, M. Jacobson, T. Jiang, H. Kierstead, A. Kündgen, F. Lazebnik, D. Mubayi, A. Naor, V. Nikiforov, J. Pach, O. Pikhurko, R. Radoicic, N. Robertson, G. Sárközy, R. Schelp, B. Sudakov, P. Winkler, X. Zhu There are no registration fees for the conference, but please tell us if you plan to come (to aid in planning). Email to excill@math.uiuc.edu. Financial support is provided by the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, the University of Illinois Department of Mathematics, and the University of Illinois Vice Chancellor for Research. Travel Support: Funds are available to defray a portion of the travel expenses of some attending graduate students and recent PhDs. Individuals desiring support should send email to excill@math.uiuc.edu. Tell us your name, institution, year of degree (expected or completed), roughly estimated cost of travel, and a sentence or two describing why you want to attend the conference.? Please send this information by September 15. Attendees within driving distance who can pool transportation will help the support dollars go farther. We hope to decide on travel awards by the end of September. Information on travel and lodging is available on the conference web site: http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~excill/ We hope to see you in Urbana-Champaign! ================================================================= ================================================================= DM-Net is a forum of the SIAM Activity Group on Discrete Mathematics We disseminate your contributions on anything of interest to the discrete mathematics community.
