Information Sheet

     Revised May 4

Course grades are now available here.

  1. My office is 422 Carver, and the phone number there is 294-8136; I can also be reached via e-mail at lieb@iastate.edu . (This is the best way to get in touch with me.) My office hours are 10-12 Monday and Friday, and 10-11 Tuesday. If you can't make these office hours, either make an appointment or take your chances. I'm usually in my office between 9 and 12 and between 2 and 4 every day (except, of course when I am teaching: Tuesday and Thursday 8 to 9:15 and 2:10 to 3:25). This information sheet, along with up-to-date information, can be found at www.math.iastate.edu/lieb/385/info.html .
  2. The textbook for this course is Boundary Value Problems, Fourth Edition by David L. Powers. We will cover Chapters 1 through 5.
  3. The course will be graded based on three in-class exams (scheduled for February 13, covering Chapters 1 and 2; March 8, covering Chapters 3 and 4; and April 17, covering Chapter 5), one final exam (May 3, place to be announced, covering the entire course), and weekly homework assignments. The three in-class exams are 40% of your grade, the final is 25% and homework is 35%. Grades will be based on your total points. Approximate cut-offs are 88% = A, 77% = B, 66% = C, 55% = D. Adjustments to this scale (such as plus/minus grades) will be made at the instructor's discretion.
  4. Homework assignments will be posted on the web  along with a due date. Typically there will be one assignment per week. Late homework will be accepted but with a 10% penalty.
  5. Here is the evaluation that I promised in class on January 30.
  6. I have now posted copies of some of my old Math 385 exams. Before giving the links, I want to point out that they are supposed to be fifty minute exams. Also, problems 3 and 5 on Exam 1 cover material which won't be on our exam and so does problem 2 on Exam 2. You should recognize that problem 2 on Exam is similar to a problem that might show up on Tuesday's exam.

  7. Link to Exam 1
    Link to Exam 2
    Link to Exam 3
    Link to Final Exam
Note that the questions on this Exam 3 do not match up exactly with the material on our Exam 3 .  (For example, our exam will include Legendre polynomials and problem 1 on the posted exam was actually covered on our Exam 2.)
