Instructor: Professor Lieberman

   Revised December 19

  1. My office is 422 Carver, and the phone number there is 294-8136; I can also be reached via e-mail at lieb@iastate.edu . (This is the best way to get in touch with me.) My office hours are 2-4 Monday and Wednesday, and 2-3 Tuesday. Click here for modifications to this schedule and to see my schedule for finals week.  If you can't make these office hours, either make an appointment or take your chances. I'm usually in my office between 9 and 12 and between 2 and 4 every day (except, of course when I am teaching: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday  9 to 9:50 and 11 to 11:50).
  2. The textbook for this course is Linear Algebra with Applications (Second Edition), by Otto Bretscher. We will cover Chapters 1 through 7.  Chapters 1 through 6 will be covered on in-class exams and on the final, but Chapter 7 will be covered only on the final.
  3. The course will be graded based on three in-class exams (scheduled for September 23, covering Chapters 1 and 2; October 21, covering Chapters 3 and 4; and November 15, covering Chapters 5 and 6), one final exam (December 17, in the regular classroom, covering the entire course), and weekly homework assignments.  The three in-class exams are 40% of your grade, the final is 25% and homework is 35%.  Grades will be based on your total points.  Approximate cut-offs are 88% = A, 77% = B, 66% = C, 55% = D.  Adjustments to this scale (such as plus/minus grades) will be made at the instructor's discretion.
  4. Details about the computation of midterm grades will be posted later.  Your midterm grade will be determined from your first in-class exam and from any homework turned in by October 7.
  5. Homework assignments will be posted on the web along with a due date. Typically there will be one assignment per week.  If, at any time, you do not turn in a complete homework assignment, you may get credit for completing the assignment by turning in both the problems you didn't work and the graded homework assignment.  (This last part is important to guarantee that you don't get double points for solving a problem twice.)
  6. Course grades are now posted on the web using the last four digits of your student ID number.  (Except for graduating seniors who did not take the final.)
  7. A practice first exam is now on the web.  Solutions to the practice exam and solutions to the first exam are on the web.
  8. A practice second exam is now on the web, so are the solutions.
  9. Here are the second and third exams from last year.
  10. Here is a practice final exam and here are solutions to problems 2, 3, 6, 7.  It is the final exam from last year.  Problem 5 contains material that will not appear on this year's final.
  11. Graduating seniors will be excused from the final exam if they are receiving at least a B grade (including homework due before dead week).
