Information Sheet

A preliminary listing for midterm grades has been posted. There is also a listing of scores accurate as of October 31, and a listing as of December 5. Here is a link to the solution for problem 9 on the practice final. You will need Adobe Acrobat to read this file. It's available through Scout or on Project Vincent.

1. My office is 422 Carver, and the phone number there is 294-8136; I can also be reached via e-mail at lieb@iastate.edu. My office hours are 9-10 and 11-12 on Monday, 2-3 on Tuesday and Thursday, and 9-10 am on Friday. If you can't make these office hours, either make an appointment or take your chances. I'm usually also in my office between 2 and 4 every day. An updated version of this information sheet will be posted on the web at www.math.iastate.edu/lieb/267/info.html.
2. Be sure to purchase all appropriate course material for the course from the bookstore. The textbook is Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems (seventh edition) by Boyce and DiPrima.
3. The course will be graded based on four in-class exams (September 13, October 2, October 26, and November 16), one final exam (December 20, 7-9 pm in Kildee 125) and weekly homework assignments due on the first school day of the week (starting with September 4). Each in-class exam is worth 100 points, the final is worth 150 points, and homework is worth 200 points for a total of 750 points. Grades will be based on your total points. Approximate cut-offs are 90% (675 points) = A, 80% (600 points) = B, 70% (525 points) = C, 55% (425 points) = D. Adjustments to this scale (such as plus/minus grades) will be made at the instructor's discretion.
4. There is a syllabus at the bottom of this page. Notice that we will cover part of Chapter 6 before Exam 4 and the rest after Exam 4, and only the first three sections of Chapter 6 will be on Exam 4. All of the course material will be covered in the Final Exam.
5. On this syllabus (and in future homework assignments), there are two kinds of homework problems listed. First are the problems labeled "to be handed". These will be graded. The other kind of problem is labeled "for discussion". You should work these as extra practice. They will not be graded, but I may use them as source problems for the exams.
6. Make-up exams are available only in cases of emergency. If you know ahead of time that you will miss an exam, see me to schedule a make-up. (In particular, if you can't make the exam on November 16, try to arrange to take the exam early.) Late homework assignments will be graded when I have time, so your midterm grade may not include all late homework.
