Prerequisites:
2 years of high school algebra, 1 year of geometry,
1 semester of trigonometry or enrollment in Math 141 or 142.

Homework:
Most homework assigned will be ungraded. Ungraded
problems on the homework will usually be the basis for the beginning
of the next class period. Most homework assignments will also include
a few problems to be turned in the next class period for grade. These
assignments may also be found by clicking assignments.
Class meetings:
Lectures are MWF 11:00 - 11:50 in Marston 207. The
first class is Monday, August 26, 2002, and the last class is
Friday, December 13, 2002. There are no classes on Labor Day (September
2), the day after the midterm (October 11), and Thanksgiving Break
(the week of November 25-29). In addition to lectures there is one
discussion section per week as follows:

The Mathematics Department runs a help room that
is free to all students. The Help Room is in 196 Carver. It begins

8:00 to 9:30 pm and Thursday 7:00 to 8:30 pm in Carver 128.

Calculators
Students are required to have a calculator for this
class. Calculators should be capable of graphing functions and zooming
in on the graphs. The department recommends the TI-85 calculator.
Some students will prefer the more elaborate and more expensive TI-92.
Bring the calculators to class and to exams. You should also know
how to use your calculator to perform the following tasks:
- plot two functions on the same graph
- evaluate a function at a number (for example,
if you call the function f and you evaluate f(1)=3.24551,
you should be able to evaluate f(3.24551) without typing the number
3.24551)
- find where a function is zero graphically
- find where two functions have the same value
Course Grading
Course grades will be based on the number of course
points accumulated. Course points will be awarded for four in-class
exams, one departmental midterm exam, and one final exam. There will
also be graded work within the recitation section, including some
graded homework. All graded work will be announced ahead of time. Grade
cutoffs will be approximately 90% for A, 80% for B, 70% for
C, and 55% for D with the exact cutoffs determined by class performance
on exams. Plus/minus guidelines will be at the discretion of the instructor
(in which case, expect 90% to be the cut-off for A-, not for A).
In addition, the midterm and final exams will have a different format
from the in-class exams, and they are likely to have lower scores
than the in-class exams.
The course coordinator may establish other minimum
requirements on the basis of performance on the uniform midterm
and final exams.
Here is an approximate distribution of course points:
- 4 hour exams @ 100 points each yield 400 points
- 1 uniform midterm @ 150 points
- 1 final exam @ 200 points yields 200 points
- Homework @ 50 points yields 50 points
- Take-home quizzes and quizzes in recitation
@ 50 points yields 50 points
- Total 850 points

Quiz description
There will be 15 quizzes of 10 points each; some
will be take-home quizzes and some will be given in recitation.
You can accumulate no more than 50 quiz points. Warning: quiz questions
need not be relevant to the course and some quizzes will be harder
than others. Here are some sample quiz questions (Answers will be announced
in class):
- What is the capital of Australia? (Answer: Canberra)
- Using pencil and paper, find the derivative
of the function f(x)=sin (x^2). (Answer: f'(x)=cos(x^2)2x.)
- Who is Steeleye Span?
- Who was the first president of Iowa State University?
(Answer: James A. Hilton)
The first quiz will be during your recitation section
the week of September 2. The second quiz will be during your
recitation section the week of September 9. The third quiz is a
take-home due Tuesday, September 17 at 5 pm with solution now included.
The fourth quiz
is a take-home due Wednesday, September 25 at 4 pm with solutions now included.
The fifth quiz is a take-home due Wednesday,
October 2 at 4 pm, click here for the
solution (in more detail than needed for full credit). The sixth
quiz will be during your recitation section the week of October 7.
The seventh quiz is a take-home due Monday,
November 4 at 4 pm. The eighth quiz will be during your recitation
section the week of November 4. The ninth quiz is a take-home due Friday, November
22 at 4 p.m. The tenth quiz will be during your recitation section
the week of November 18. The eleventh
quiz (answer: between 6.3 and 6.4 miles) and the twelfth quiz (answer: a=-3, b=7)are take-homes
due Wednesday, December 4 at 4 p.m. The thirteenth quiz is a take home due Friday, December
6 at 4 p.m. The fourteenth and fifteenth quizzes are take-homes due at 4 p.m. on
December 9 with solutions now included.
Sickness policy:
If you are sick the day of an exam, you should contact
the instructor by phone on the day of the exam to arrange a timely
make-up exam.
