Introduction to Mathematical Ideas

Course Objectives: The main goals of this course can be summarized as follows:

_ Logic, Critical Thinking, and Problem Solving

 

_ Number Sense and Estimation

 

_ Statistical Interpretation and Basic Probability

 

_ Interpreting Mathematical Models

 

Homework: There will be 12 homework assignments. Your worst two homework scores will be dropped and 10 of them will be recorded. Hence, no late homework will be accepted. In addition, a suggested problem set will be assigned for each section and the exams will be mostly based on these suggested problems.

 

Exams: There will be 2 exams and a final. The first exam will be given on the 4th week of class. Details for the exams will be announced later. Make-up exams will only be given at the discretion of the instructor. You can make-up an exam only if an emergency causes you to miss a test. You must contact me (e-mail or in person) within 24 hours of the absence in order to be able to make up the test.

 

Grading: Your grade will be determined by the percentage of the total points listed below.

 

Exam 1: 20%

Exam 2: 20%

Homework: 30%

Final Exam: 30%

Total: 100%

 

Grading Scale: The standard grading scale will be used as follows: 100-90: A, A-;

89-80: B+, B, B-; 79-70: C+, C, C-; 69-60: D+, D, D-; and 59-0: F.
