Assignment 5 (assigned 1/25, due 1/28).

This assignment continues with section 2.2 and also includes section 2.3.  There is no "extra" paragraph to write this time.

Read section 2.3.

Use the first, second, and fifth logical equivalences in Theorem 2.9 on page 43 to write the negations of the following sentences.  (Just write the negations as English sentences.  Do not use logical symbols.  It does not matter for this exercise whether the sentences are true or false.)

a. The number 5 is even or the number 8 is odd.

b. If the number 4 is even then the number 5 is even.

c. The sine function is continuous and the tangent function has vertical asymptotes.

d. If f(x) is a  twice differentiable function then f(x) is continuous and the derivative of f(x) is continuous.

Do problem 11 on page 46.

Do problems 1bcf, 4bcd, and 7 on pages 57-58.
