Introduction

TOP

Paper lore is an odd area of magic as it concerns itself with paper, drawing, objects made of paper, and the preservation and enchantment of paper. Some of the more interesting spells in it involve the creation of origami creatures. Origami skill is a good complement to paper lore. Some spells, those with an ``O'' after their names, require the folding of a complex origami shape as a part of the spell. The mage must learn oragami skill to use such spells. See the description of the skill Origami in the section on skills for details. The DP cost of the oragami folds associated with spells are given in the spell description. Another group of spells require that the caster draw a picture or color a piece of paper. Mages that use paper lore often have artistic skills.

Special failure mode three divides the duration by 3d6.

The total number of +5's to hit may not exceed the casters skill level with paper lore. Special failure mode one creates a wooden practice sword with 2/3 the correct break that does impact damage. Csp: -lots.
Mana: 11 or more.
Range: none.
Duration: permanent or until used, see below.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.

This spell permits the caster to fold paper into a representation of a person or creature known to the caster. Typically this takes 5 DP and includes paint and decorations to make the effigy match the person that is the target of the spell. Once the effigy is made, the person depected saves versus magic. If the caster has blood or other personal traces from his target this save is at -30. Such traces must be releatively fresh. If the target makes the save the effigy bursts into flames and is destroyed with no ill effects to the target. If the target blows the save then the caster may cast informational spells on the effigy and they act as if cast on the target. The caster may cast a damaging spell on the effigy as well, and it affects the target, but this breaks the connection from the target to the effigy. A poison picture is an example of a damaging spell that could be used via an effigy. Throwing the effigy into a hot fire is another possibility. Special failure mode one adds +30 to the save. Special failure mode two causes the effigy to have a duration of 6d6 hours, unknown to the caster, after which it loses its powers. Special failure mode two creates a spray of small parasols suitable for mixed drinks. Special failure mode three divides the duration by 3d6.

TOP
Poison Picture.
Rank: 4.
Csp: -600.
Mana: 9 or more.
Range: none.
Duration: inherited.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to mixed a poison into the paints or inks used to make a picture. The picture merely looks bad, odd, or menacing until folded into an origami focus of a spell or used in a magical picture. A poison picture does not violate the clean and fresh condition required for oragami fold spells. The effect of this poisoned paint is to permit the poison to function through the construct. A Crane Messenger would poison the person that unfolded it. An origami blade would let the blade use a dose of the poison (multiple doses of poison can be placed in pictures, as many as the caster's rank, but only one acts at a time). A poison picture can act via an origami throwing star. Placed in a soul picture it causes the poison to do spiritual damage to the character. Placed in a vortex or trap picture it poisons the trapped creature when it is released. Placed in a transit picture it poisons those transiting. Placed into a fold that makes an animal that attacks the poison can be used to envenom the creature. A poison picture remains good indefinitely unless the paper is dampened, burned, torn, or otherwise damaged. Check with your referee to see which paper lore spells can work with a poison picture. Special failure mode one reduces the poisons damage to d3's. Special failure mode two gives +30 to the save versus poison or grants a save versus a poison that does not normally have one. Special failure mode three makes the poison picture hair trigger, poisoning anyone that touches it.

The caster prepares the origami fold and expends the mana for it but leaves the paper flat. The result is a square of paper that can be folded ten times as fast as the normal origami fold spell, to a minimum of -3 using Csp. The prepared paper acts, once folded, just as if the origami fold had been cast. Special failure modes are inherited.

Robe(O).

The caster may paint the paper before he begins to fold and the paint will become dye and embroidery, making a fancy robe or kimono. The caster may get 2x duration for +1 mana. Special failure mode one makes a robe that does not quite fit. Special failure mode two divides the duration by 3d6. Special failure mode three makes a robe with absurd ruffles, flourishes, or an excessive train.

TOP
Soul Picture.
Rank: 5.
Csp: -1200.
Mana: 11 or more.
Range: see below.
Duration: see below.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to paint a picture of a person's soul. The art may or may not be representational. If the person is willing their soul enters the picture as the spell is completed, otherwise the caster undergoes spell failure. A successful soul picture contains the vital portions of the person's spirit. If it is destroyed then the person is obliterated. They are worse than dead, no resurrection is possible. The picture need not be near the person; it may be hidden, folded, and disguised as he wishes. The soul picture counts as part of the person's body. If it is used to create a magic item the person acts as if he is the magic item, for example. A person may embed his spirit in no more than one soul picture. If held by another person, this picture can make the person whose soul is pictured obedient to the person holding the picture. Exerting the control requires a stress save. As long as the picture is intact, the person whose soul is pictured does not die. If the picture is in an area where there is enough mana for a mage to regain mana then the person will regenerate one hitpoint per ten minutes. This holds even if the person is burned to ashes: the person will regrow. The caster may get +1 point of regeneration per 10 minutes for each +1 mana. Special failure mode one causes the person to regenerate at a rate of one hitpoint per hour. Special failure mode two causes the picture to radiate intense magic making it obvious to anyone with magic skill that passes within 10" of it. Special failure mode three causes the picture to reflect the person's current state so that a mage can read their feelings and desires from the picture.

TOP
Star(O).
Rank: 4.
Csp: -120.
Mana: 7 or more.
Range: none.
Duration: 30 minutes.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to fold a square of paper into a small, six-pointed star. This fold requires 1 DP to learn. The paper must be fresh and clean. When the fold is completed and the spell cast the star emits brilliant light, clearly illuminating a 12" radius at ground level (if it is dark). The star rises 3" per round until it reaches a height declared by the caster (no more then 50") and illuminates a radius 10" greater than its height. This illumination is several times as bright as full moonlight, but cannot compete in sunlight. The illumination lasts for the duration of the spell. The caster may add 10" to the maximum height (and so the illuminated radius) or double the duration for +1 mana. The star can perform station keeping against a wind whose inches per round is at most the caster's rank with paper lore. It can also drift with (or sail with) the wind. Special failure mode one divides the duration by 3d6. Special failure mode two makes the illumination brown and dim in the entire radius. Special failure mode three causes the stars to burst into flames, casting the illumination for 3d3 rounds.

Throwing Star(O).
Rank: 2.
Csp: -75.
Mana: 3 or more.
Range: none, see below.
Duration: 3 hours, see below.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to fold a square of paper into a four-pointed throwing star. This fold requires 1 DP to learn. The paper must be fresh and clean. Once the spell is completed the star is armed and remains usable for the duration of the spell. When someone prepares to throw it it transforms to steel and becomes a missile that does 5d6 of edge damage. The star may be thrown with missile or spell to hit, at the thrower's whim. The caster may get 2x duration or +d6 damage for +1 mana. Special failure mode one causes the star to do d3's of damage instead of d6's. Special failure mode two divides the ready duration by 3d6. Special failure mode three makes the star -30 to hit.

TOP
Transit Picture.
Rank: 6.
Csp: -lots.
Mana: 13 or more.
Range: none.
Duration: see below.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to paint a picture of a person or place quite familiar to him and invest a mana point or unspent experience point into it. This process requires 10 DPs. Typically this is done onto stiff pasteboard or other strong paper. Once cast the resulting picture has the ability to contact the person, creating a teleportal into their environment or open a teleportal to a depicted place. This ability requires that the caster concentrate on the picture or that someone with magic skill both concentrate and make a stress save at -30. The process of making contact with the person or place depicted requires 2d3 rounds and drops the elusiveness of the person making contact by 30. Both the person making contact and the person contacted may break contact with a stress save. A person being contacted can block contact with a stress save. The person with the transit picture may break contact by covering the picture with their hand or with an object. Once contact is established the person using the card and the person at the far end may talk and are at a close personal distance. Either person may bring other people of object through the teleportal but third parties may not use it of their own initiative. Normally a transit picture cannot cross between planes of reality, this restriction is relaxed for +5 mana. The death of a person that is the focus of a transit picture inactivates it. Special failure mode one creates a picture that requires a stress save for the caster to use and forces everyone else to save at -30 to make contact. Special failure mode two makes a transit picture that disappears after its first use. Special failure mode three costs the caster a point of sanity.

TOP
Trap Picture.
Rank: 6.
Csp: -lots.
Mana: 13 or more.
Range: see below.
Duration: until used.
Area of Effect: one piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to paint a picture, usually on a stiff pasteboard. This requires 15 DP. The picture is left with a blank place in it somewhere. If a material creature views the picture it must save versus magic or be drawn into the card and imprisoned. The creature remains suspended and unaware of the passage of time. The picture transforms to place a good, artistic depiction of the imprisoned creature in the blank space. If the picture is destroyed, torn, or otherwise damaged the trapped creature is released. The caster may also release the creature by touch or as a targeted spell at the picture or the person holding it. Releasing the creature destroys the picture in any case. The caster may deduct 5 from the save to resist being pulled into the picture for each +1 mana. If the name of a race or type of creature is incorporated into the picture then it can affect only that type or race and members of the type of race are at -15 to save versus the cards ability to imprison. If the true name of a specific creature, or if their blood is incorporated into the ink, then the picture can affect only that creature and that creature saves at -30. Special failure mode one permits the creature to slowly awaken and release itself with a stress save at a time of its own choosing. Special failure mode two gives +30 to the save not to be captured. Special failure mode three makes the card teleport the creature elsewhere rather than imprisoning it. The card still depicts the creature and the teleport is rolled on the teleport failure table as if the creature was apporting to some location chosen by the referee.

TOP
Vortex Picture.
Rank: 5.
Csp: -lots.
Mana: 9 or more.
Range: see below.
Duration: until used.
Area of Effect: one piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to paint a picture, usually on a stiff pasteboard. This requires 10 DP. The picture is built around a vortex and incorporates symbols designating a type of extra-planar being. This spell must be learned again for each such type of extra plananr. The types include non-corporeal undead, earth, air, fire, water, void, or ether elementals, foundationals, demons, and other such creatures. Consult your referee about other types that may be affected. Learning the symbols needed for a particular type of creature requires the help of a mage that can summon such a creature or someone with a knowledge skill concerning the type of creature. If a creature of a type other than the one the picture matches views the picture they will find it disturbing. If a creature of the type in question views the picture it must save versus magic or be drawn into the card and imprisoned. The creature remains suspended and unaware of the passage of time. The picture transforms to become a good, artistic depiction of the imprisoned creature. If the picture is destroyed, torn, or otherwise damaged the creature is released. The caster may also release the creature by touch or as a targeted spell at the picture or the person holding it. Releasing the creature destroys the picture in any case. The caster may deduct 5 from the save to resist being pulled into the picture for each +1 mana. Special failure mode one permits the creature to slowly awaken and release itself with a stress save at a time of its own choosing. Special failure mode two gives +30 to the save not to be captured. Special failure mode three makes the card have no type, but the caster will not know that.

TOP
Warding Picture.
Rank: 4.
Csp: -600.
Mana: 9 or more.
Range: none.
Duration: until used up.
Area of Effect: one square piece of paper.
Description:

This spell permits the character to paint a picture of a type of object that can do harm. Examples would be blades, flames, teeth, falling rocks, lightning, etc. If the paper is folded in a square with the drawing on the inside and carried upon someones person it stops a number of points of damage equal to 10 points per rank of the caster with paper lore of the type of harm pictured. If the number of warding pictures carried by a person exceeds the rank of the caster of any one of them then the picture loses its magical properties. When a pictures defenses are used up the paper falls to dust. The type of damage is not what is relevant, it is the source. A picture of flames protects against flames but not heat. A picture of lightning protects against lightning but not an electric shock. A picture of swords does not guard against arrows or axe-blades. The picture must be of a fairly specific source of danger, consul your referee. Special failure mode one reduces the points of protection by half. Special failure mode two forces a stress save on the part of the protected to use the protection. Special failure mode three forces the picture to make the casters save versus magic or fail each time it protects its possessor. The save is made after the picture stops damage.
