FEM_CODES - Finite Element Method Demonstration Programs

FEM_CODES is a collection of a few simple finite element method (FEM) programs. These codes are intended primarily to be used by students as an introduction to finite element method programming ideas. A typical programming project asks a student to take one of these programs, learn how to use it, and then extend it in some way.

The originals of these codes come from Professor Max Gunzburger.

The codes are:

• ONEDFE is the basic program for solving a linear boundary value problem using piecewise linear elements and a fixed mesh in 1D.
• ADAPT is a version of ONEDFE which varies the mesh to reduce the error.
• NONLIN is a version of ONEDFE which solves a nonlinear problem.
• PMETHOD is a version of ONEDFE which uses the P method, varying the order of the finite element basis.

Files you may copy include:

• adapt.f90, adaptive grid refinement;
• adapt.out, output from a run;
• nonlin.f90, code for a nonlinear problem;
• nonlin.out, output from a run;
• onedfe.f90, a simple 1D finite element code;
• onedfe.out, output from a run;
• pmethod.f90, implements the P method;
• pmethod.out, output from a run;
