Getting Started with Self-Paced Math 140
- Read the Course Summary. Familiarize yourself with
the structure of this website, and the information it contains. If you could not
attend either of the informational meetings during the first week of classes, you
can pick up a handout outside my office (428 Carver). If you then have additional
questions, contact me in person (428 Carver), by email,
or phone (515-294-1282).
- Buy the textbook. There are two possible textbook packages
that you can purchase. New packages include the textbook, Student Solutions Manual,
CD-ROM (Windows format), and Schaum's Precalculus Outline. You can also buy used
packages (probably at Campus Bookstore) which do not have the Schaum's Outline. Either
is OK for the course. Also, if you have a Macintosh computer, you can go to the Math
Computer Lab (449 Carver) and exchange the Windows CD-ROM for a Macintosh version.
- If you are a distance education student (i.e., not in residence at ISU), you
will need to make special arrangements for a proctor
for your exams. Also, in this case you should be registered in section XW.
- Start your coursework with the Detailed Schedule
page.
- Make sure you notice the deadlines for the unit exams and the dates for the midterms
and the final exam. It would probably be a good idea to print out
this page and post it where you can easily refer to it.
- The Detailed Schedule page will take you to the study
guidelines for Unit 1, along with the Unit 1 exam description. Follow
the instructions given there to learn about using the computer testing system
and how to complete the Unit 1 Homework and take the Unit 1 Exam.
- If you need help with your coursework, take advantage of the resources listed
on the Help page.
- Pay attention to the three important guidelines
listed on the Help page, and make sure that you plan enough
time in your schedule to devote to this course.
- Register with the NetTutor online tutoring system, and attend one of the
demonstration sessions (see the Online Tutoring page
for instructions).
