Math 140 Schedule

Units : The course is divided into 10 units, as shown in the table below. Study guidelines for completing each unit, along with detailed unit exam descriptions, are provided by clicking on the corresponding topic in the table (some links are not yet available).

The "target" date listed for each unit in the table is the recommended date for completion of each unit. This is designed to help you keep on track to complete the entire course by the end of the semester. However, each unit must be completed by the "deadline" date. If you have not completed the homework assignment and taken the unit exam by this date, you will receive 0 points for that unit. Virtually no exceptions are granted for missing deadlines (see the deadline policy for details).

If you usually wait until the deadline dates to take the exams, you will probably do very poorly in the class. Try to work on the course every day on a regular basis, and keep up with the target dates as much as possible.

There are also significant incentives for taking unit exams before the deadline date:

• If you take the unit exam before the deadline date, you will get 30 minutes extra time for the exams.
• You will be able to repeat the exam if you want, subject to the following rule:
  • You cannot take more than one exam on the same unit on the same day. The idea is that you should spend some time reviewing the material and your previous exam before trying again.
• Grade appeals are generally not granted, except in certain circumstances (see the grade appeals section for details). Thus, if you happen to make some syntax errors or other simple errors on your exam, your only recourse is to repeat the exam, according to the rule in the last item.

Note that classes begin January 8 and end April 27, and there are holidays on January 15 and March 12-16. Also, note that the target and deadline dates converge just before the two midterm exams, and again at the end of the semester.

Unit exams must be taken online in the Mathematics Computer Lab (449 Carver), or with a proctor if you are in the Extended Education section XW. Homework assignments may be completed online from your home or anywhere else.

Midterm and Final Exams: There will be two midterm exams and one final exam, as shown in the following table. These are written exams. Study guidelines for each exam, along with detailed exam descriptions, are provided by clicking on the corresponding exam in the table.
