Statistical Methods for Network and Computer Security
David Marchette
Naval Surface Warfare Center
Abstract:
From the perspective of a data analyst, network and computer
monitoring produce huge amounts of complex, interesting data.
Our group at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) has been
looking at such data for several years. This talk will be an
overview of some of the areas that we have investigated, with
some suggestions for areas of future research. I will touch on
backscatter analysis of denial of service attacks, profiling
users using window titles and web servers visited, and passive
operating system fingerprinting. The focus will be on statistical
techniques, with some graph theory thrown in for good measure.
